High alert[edit | edit source]

Malawi's opposition leader, Lazarus Chakwera, was declared the winner of the controversial rerun of the presidential election.

Peter Mutharika's now discredited victory in 2019 and his subsequent 13 months in office were dealt with by a legal process that many analysts regarded as a notable advancement for the use and enforcement of democracy in Africa.

All Malawian citizens who are 18 or over are entitled to vote. All foreign nationals who have lived in Malawi for 7 years can also vote, and were able to last time.
