A series of 4 blasts ripped through the army arms depot in the city of Bata. It has killed between 17 and 20 people and injured 400 to 600.

The city has been badly damaged near the base. It is the economic center of Equatorial Guinea.

The nation's rescue services converged on the city to help.

A huge plume of smoke hanging over the city on social media images.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema said in a press conference at 15.00 UTC, that the explosion was due to the “negligent handling of dynamite”. Some said that the origin of the blast could be in fact a spark accidentally coming from stubble burning by local farmers.
